Poetry Open Mic with Readings From M.C. Poets Mauricio Novoa and M L Mutrux

Join us for a reading from poets Mauricio Novoa and M L Mutrux and a poetry open mic at Making Worlds Bookstore & Social Center. M L will open the evening with poetry from their in-progress chapbook Bender Poems. We’ll then have 45 minutes for open mic poetry MC’d by M L and Mauricio, followed by a special reading from Mauricio of work from his chapbook Memories From The Beltway as well as new works. We will provide some beverages and snacks, and poetry books will be available for 10% off! Mauricio Novoa was born and raised in Glenmont, MD to Salvadoran refugees. He attended Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA, where he lived after graduation. There he worked with middle and high school students in a Migrant Education after-school program, helped tutor in adult ESL classes, and volunteered at Casa de le Cultura programs. He briefly relocated to Austin, TX, where he volunteered at Resistencia Books and the Barrio Writers program in Pflugerville. He received his Master’s degree from Queens University of Charlotte. Memorias From The Beltway is his first full-length collection of poetry. His work has also been published in La Horchata Zine, The Petigru Review, Acentos Review, Blue Mesa Review, Latino Book Review, The Mixtape Literary Journal Vol. 2, and the anthologies The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States, The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 4: LatinNext. , and This Is What America Looks Like: The Washington Writer’s Publishing House Anthology Poetry and Fiction From DC, Maryland, Virginia. He currently lives in Gettysburg.

M L Mutrux is a poet and writer now based in Philadelphia. They work at Making Worlds Bookstore, helping folks around Philly make community through study groups, film screenings, and book talks in a space dedicated to liberatory literature. They continue to work from afar at Red Salmon Arts, Casa de Resistencia Books, located in Austin, Texas, where they have volunteered and worked since 2013. They are a contributor to the people’s history projects Austin Beloved Community and Tejana Historias.
